2022 marks 100 years of the BBC when it launched its first radio service in 1922. We take a look back at milestones and features throughout the years, illustrated with archival images of years gone by.
BBC starts its first daily radio service called 2LO in November 1922.
BBC Television broadcast testing by John Logie Baird in November 1929.
King George V makes his first royal address to the Empire in December 1932.
BBC launched their television service in November 1936. This is the television tower that transmitted the service from Alexandra Palace in London.
Charles De Gaulle broadcasts to France regularly after fleeing to London in 1940.
First edition of Desert Island Discs is presented by Roy Plomley in January 1942.
BBC News comes to the TV in January 1948. It was normally voiced by John Snagge.
The first ever coronation is seen live on BBC in June 1953. These four women were being auditioned as potential commentators for the coronation.
The Radiophonic Workshop is established at Maida Vale in April 1958. It was responsible for the Doctor Who theme tune.
Blue Peter was launched in October 1958. It ran for 50 years.
Newsround, presented by John Craven, goes on air in April 1972.
Life on Earth, a natural history series presented by David Attenborough goes on air in January 1979.
The first breakfast TV service goes on air in January 1983. It was presented by Frank Bough, Selina Scott and weatherman Francis Wilson.
BBC’s most watched TV show, Eastenders, launched in February 1985.
