Student feature with photographer Joyce Hernandez

Every quarter we put the spotlight on one of our student photographers, and Joyce Hernandez whose atmospheric travel and professional food images caught our eye this time.

CG: Tell us a little about yourself.

JH: I am originally from Spain and have been living in London since 2014.  I studied finance and accounting back in Spain and although I always liked photography, I never thought of it as a real career.

We have this mentality back in Spain which is slowly changing that making a living from arts is not viable, so I kept my photography a hobby for many years.

I went to multiple workshops and short courses to improve my skills, but it wasn’t until Covid hit us all when I decided to really try and pursue a career as a photographer.

CG: How did your journey start in studying photography?

JH: In 2021 I started my journey with the British Academy of Photography which has not only helped me to improve my photography, but also has given me the drive and confidence I needed to achieve my dream.

CG: What kind of photography do you enjoy capturing at the moment?

JH: I have done nearly all kinds of photography styles; from long exposure and light painting in my early years, to landscapes, travel and environmental, which is what I enjoy the most nowadays. Along with food and drink photography.

What I really like about environmental and food photography is being able to help chefs, bartenders and businesses to create a defined aesthetic for their creations. I say creations as I strongly believe that food and drinks are a form of art, they have a character, an origin.

Good food, like good art, is aware of its environment and can create memories and evoke feelings which I intend to reflect on my photography.

CG: Why did you choose to upload your imagery to Alamy?

JH: After doing some research online I found that Alamy has a really diverse stock photo collection, on which I could sell anything from everyday images to specific niches, which I thought could be the appropriate place for selling my images as my portfolio is quite varied.

CG: Any advice for students who would like to become a contributor with us?

JH: Yes, I would recommend to any person that when uploading galleries, to ensure all the images in the batch are related or similar. This will save some time when adding tags when these are approved.

CG: Where do you hope to be in the future with your photography?

JH: My goal is to be able to make a living from photography. Perhaps open my own studio if things go well.
